I’ve never felt so at home then when I’m in the kitchen creating beautiful things. I don’t have any crazy stories about where I’ve come from or how I got to where I am today, I just have this: I dabbled in the thought of starting my own business for a while after finishing my schooling in 2015. Seeing other amazing people in my community following their passion and starting up some pretty kickass businesses really gave me the push to do it myself. In October of 2016 my little business was born with the help of my incredibly supportive family, friends and partner. Since day one I have learnt so much about the art of cakes and desserts, my strengths and weaknesses both personally and in business and how deeply it impacts your whole sense of self when you do what you love daily.

What we do is nice and simple, it’s freshly baked bread! Since 1980, we’ve been committed to delighting our customers and being pillars of our communities. Because you don’t just deserve butter, you deserve the best. You may not realise it, but your bread has undergone an amazing journey well before you take it home and tuck in. Our flour is sourced from Aussie farms, processed by family-owned millers and lovingly crafted into bread by our bakers. I’m Amy, a qualified chef who decided to teach myself to make cakes! I’m also a wife to an awesome guy and mum to Archie and Matilda. I’m a Dubbo local and love how much the area is growing and how much support I’ve received as a small business owner. I’ve built an amazing network of other like-minded creatives who help me daily in business. I kind of just fell into cake decorating. As a working Mum, I left my full-time chef job to make cakes from home. From a Facebook page, and doing cakes on the side, I now have my own commercial kitchen and shopfront, and do this full time.

The first Donut King store opened in Sydney in 1981 and ever since, Donut King has continued to grow, now boasting more than 220 stores across Australia, making us the biggest and best donut empire the country has ever seen! Sharing our passion for all things donuts throughout Australia and around the globe is one of our main goals. We currently have Donut King stores in New Zealand, United Kingdom and Indonesia, and the list is set to grow. For the average Australian kid, the ultimate reward (and break for mum and dad…) during the weekly shopping excursion was a stop at your local Donut King. It stood out in the food court like a pink beacon you just couldn’t resist. The brightly coloured iced donuts, the delight of the cream and jam, the faces pressed to the glass experiencing the magic of the warm cinnamon donuts bouncing along the mini conveyor belt and landing in a delicious carousel of cinnamon and sugar. Fresh, hot and ready to be eaten! We all have memories of family time spent with a Donut King signature cinnamon donut, and millions of Aussies have grown up sharing the experience – it’s a place for the young and the young at heart.

We had been recommended to go to Short Street Store for breakfast and we were very pleased that we did.The breakfast was great, juices were freshly squeezed and the coffee was excellent (and I am a self confessed coffee snob).Would definitely recommend! This cosy little gem of a cafe is hidden away in a quiet residential street. It has a lovely rustic vibe and is very welcoming. We sat outside in the patio area and enjoyed the beautiful Dubbo sunshine with our meal. The highlight was my daughter’s breakfast. She received the best babyccino I’ve seen in my life, complete with a marshmallows smile. If her eating is anything to go by the children’s pancakes were delicious. We tried both the sweet and savoury options. If you have a sweet tooth look no further than the Frenchy Boys toast, a perfect combination of sweet and sour. It’s a light and yummy french toast, topped with whipped cream and a delightful passionfruit compote. Though a little too sweet for me I enjoyed my bite. I had the brekkie burger with added hash brown. It was both filling and tasty.
