In 2001 Koko Black set off to discover the essence of chocolate which we felt was not being fully expressed in Australia. We had the idea that chocolate could inspire, connect and ignite the senses and dreamed of creating something unique and special.
We travelled to Germany to learn the art of making chocolate from the bean and then on to Belgium where we met a passionate and talented chocolatier, who later helped kick start the development of Koko Black’s chocolate signature.

For over 80 years and 5 generations, we’ve been making and selling the best and freshest nuts, fruits and chocolates in Australia. It all started in March of 1934 with somewhat humble beginnings. Herb bought small nut stall in the Adelaide Central Market just so his wife Doris would have something to do. And that was that; and who knew that nut stall would still be with 11 retail stores and a warehouse factory over 80 years later?!
Since 2004, we’ve opened a store in Burnside Village and in November 2013 we opened at No.1 Rundle Mall in the old Darrel Lea site, one of the busiest and most prestigious locations in South Australia – I bet Herb & Doris never pictured it coming this far, but here we are.

Sava Tantis is the father of four and the original proprietor of the business. He is known to the locals as the last chocolatier in South Australia. Not only are we a family owned and operated business, but we have created products that are made with healthy ingredients and are uniquely gluten and GMO free, although you can’t taste the difference. In addition, all of our ingredients are sourced locally wherever possible – we know where and how our ingredients are grown.
