In 2016 a small group of leaders from our sister church in Glenelg, went to North Adelaide to start a church. The vision was to bring God’s light to the cultural hub of North Adelaide, in particular to reach out to the hundreds of students living in college accommodation in the area. We are a small church and still growing. The vision has not changed. We seek to grow in our community, providing love, support and truth to the hundreds and thousands that live within the inner north suburbs of Adelaide. We are an Acts 29 church. Acts is a book in the New Testament of the Bible which follows the growth and development of churches following Jesus death and resurrection. As a church we want to mimic these early Christian’s passion for sharing the good news of Jesus, remain true to the Bible’s vision of bringing God’s word to all, and multiply faithfully – trusting in God’s provision and plan.

Scots Church Adelaide was originally called “Chalmers Free Church”, named after the Rev Dr Thomas Chalmers who established the Free Church of Scotland. It was built by a group of prominent Adelaide citizens, early immigrants to South Australia, who supported the Free Church of Scotland movement. Determined to establish a Free Church in Adelaide, this group called the Rev John Gardner from Scotland. He arrived in Adelaide in March 1850 and immediately he and the group set about purchasing the land on the corner of North Terrace and Pulteney Street, and building a church there. The foundation stone for the new church was laid on the 8th of September 1850, six months after the Rev Gardner’s arrival.

n keeping with our liberal, English tradition, North Adelaide Baptist is an open church. We seek a faith that is intelligent and informed and we strive to be an inclusive community. Another way of putting that is that we continually endeavour to be a safe place where…You are free to explore your own sense of the divine presence through word, music, silence and symbol; You will not be told what you ought to believe; You will encounter preaching that is relevant, topical and contemporary, and which takes seriously the insights of critical scholarship and our (post)modern world.

Catholicism was planted in South Australia by a small company of Catholics who had emigrated from Ireland and England. Initially, as they had neither priest nor church, they met for worship in private houses. Their first priest William Benson arrived in Adelaide in 1841. In 1842 Rome subdivided the vast diocese of Sydney, creating a diocese of Adelaide which embraced the new province of South Australia. Francis Murphy was appointed as first bishop. The first Catholic churches were built in Adelaide (1845) and at Morphett Vale (1846). The first portion of St Francis Xavier’s Cathedral in Adelaide was opened in 1858.

Established in 1995, Rise Church began in a Bi-Lo shopping centre under the name North East Christian Centre. Our church has undergone several name changes and location changes over the last twenty years. Today, Rise Church is one church in two locations, Adelaide and Phnom Penh. We are also reaching people through our online platform, Rise Online. Our mission is the same today as it was when we began many years ago, to make a difference in our community and in our world, through the truth, hope and love of Jesus.
