During the 20th century, people moved from the centre of Sydney to the suburbs. Sydney rapidly expanded with sprawling new developments making it one of the least dense and most suburbanized cities in the world. Workers commuted to the city but “lived for the weekend” which was enjoyed in the suburbs. Our suburban homes were where we socialised. In the 1980s, at 6pm on a Friday the city was a ghost town. Churches followed this migration and our largest and strongest churches formed in the outer suburban fringe. The only churches left in the city centre were in decline and typically comprised of older members who had once lived close to the city but now commuted to church from suburbs far away. Apart from Sunday, their lives were lived in the suburbs.
Now, in the 21st century, people are moving back from the suburbs into the centre of Sydney. This is the trend in many world cities. Within a 20 minute ring of the city centre medium to high-density housing is booming. The predominant group attracted to the city are young professionals. However, downsizing empty-nesters and even families are increasingly moving close to the city.

Anchor Church Sydney began in January 2014 with 17 people praying in a small two-bedroom apartment in Erskineville.
We began with a desire to see the city of Sydney come to know Jesus. We were struck by the statistics—over 4 million people that don’t know Jesus; over 60% of churchgoers over the age of 50—and we realised there is a desperate need for churches to reach the emerging generation. We had a vision of a church that would see our city transformed by the gospel as we made disciples of Jesus.
As we shared our vision, God grew our team, and we began meeting in Gospel Communities scattered across our city. We started sharing our lives together as a family, praying expectantly for God build his church.
We had our public launch on 18 May 2014 and have been making disciples and multiplying Gospel Communities ever since. Today, we’re a vibrant family of churches with over 400 adults and kids.

We have built a house of worship for the loud and proud, the lost, the lonely and the enquiring alike. We have welcomed those with families and those without. We have catered to women and men who have felt alienated by other churches. We have supported beloved friends who are living with HIV. We have welcomed refugees, new migrants and visitors from abroad.
The Spirit truly does move at MCC Sydney. We are committed to teaching and learning more of the message of Christ, and helping each other learn and grow with God and to spreading the gospel in a supportive, non-bullying manner. If we had to pick a single thing we wanted to be famous for, we’d probably say the way we welcome anyone who wants to worship with us.

St Philip’s is the oldest parish in Australia, together with the Parish of Parramatta.
In January 1788 eleven ships carrying around 1400 people, including 786 convicts, arrived from England on the east coast of Australia to establish a penal colony. The Chaplain of the First Fleet was the Rev’d Richard Johnson and he conducted the first Christian service in Australia on 3 February 1788. St Philip’s is the custodian of Mr Johnson’s (First Fleet) Bible and Prayer Book.
The wattle and daub church built by Mr. Johnson in 1793 was burnt down in 1798. A new stone church, named St Philip’s, was opened in 1810, and this was replaced by the current building in 1856. Sydneysiders have been worshiping Jesus Christ as Lord on Church Hill for at least 2 centuries.
