The story of Gorman begins at the last stop on the Great Ocean Road in the coastal town of Warrnambool. In the 1970s the town had a tight knit population of 25,000 and of these people one young woman would go onto become one of Australia’s most recognised names in women’s fashion. Her name Lisa Gorman. How we spend our childhoods can often foreshadow our future. The eldest of four daughters, Lisa started her fashion empire young by creating clothing for the Gorman sisters’ Barbie collection. Learning to sew as an eight-year-old by her mother Jane on her great grandmother’s hand operated Singer machine, Lisa collected fabric scraps from her neighbours and designed pint-sized couture. Her looks included tube tops, leggings and even sweater dresses with iron-on numbers. Once the miniature collections were ready, the Gorman sisters would stage a fashion show with their dolls complete with a DIY runway, lighting and ‘80s pop playlist.

Harris Scarfe began back in South Australia in 1849 where Mr George Peter Harris & Mr John C Lanyon formed a partnership and laid the foundations for their business as Lanyon & Harris. Lanyon & Harris opened their first premises in Hindley Street, Adelaide during 1850 in a large brick warehouse and operated as an ironmongery wholesaler. After 5 years of trading, Lanyon returned home to England leaving Harris as the sole owner of the business and the opportunity to change the name to Geo. P. Harris. 1857 saw George Harris welcome George Scarfe and Richard Smith as major partners and so began Geo. P. Harris Scarfe & Co. In 1877 the company purchased their first Grenfell Street address. The business continued to grow and in 1920 the company was rebranded to Harris Scarfe, the name we all know it as today.

The legacy of Pilgrim Clothing began in 88’, when it was created as a part of an overall collective brand at the peak of pop-culture inspired fashion. In 92’, the brand was purchased by Grant Olver, who is still a co-owner of the brand today. Seeing amazing potential for Pilgrim, room for expansion and progression, it was an opportunity that he knew he couldn’t pass up. In the same year, we began producing our own product, as well as opening up our first store in Acland Street, Melbourne, Australia. Twenty-seven-years, seventeen stores and a whole lot of hard work later, we here at Pilgrim are so proud of how far we have come and what we stand for as a team and as a company.
