A group of eleven met at the AMP Chambers on the corner of Queen and Edwards Streets, Brisbane on 4 November 1896 and decided “that a Golf Club be formed in Brisbane to be called The Brisbane Golf Club.” It was decided to ask His Excellency The Governor of Queensland, Lord Lamington to be the first President and to establish the course at Chelmer, between Honour Avenue and the river, upstream of the Indooroopilly Bridge. It was announced that upwards of thirty gentlemen had expressed a desire to become members.
On 12 December 1896 on a typical sultry Brisbane summer day, Lord Lamington formally opened the course only 5 weeks and 3 days after the foundation meeting. So began golf in Brisbane, capital of the colony of Queensland. Other golf clubs had already been formed in the provincial centres of Townsville on 4 January 1893 and Toowoomba on 26 August 1896.

Nudgee Golf Club today is a 36-hole golfing complex located 11.5 kilometres from the Brisbane central business district, adjacent to Nudgee Beach and the Moreton Bay foreshores, and is also bounded by the Gateway Arterial Road, the northern end of Nudgee Road.
Its proximity to Moreton Bay means that cooling breezes are a regular feature, which can also provide testing golfing conditions for players. The original nine-hole course was laid out by a group of golfing enthusiasts including Mr W. Childs, the owner of the land, and Mr W. Scott, a Scottish professional, during the latter half of the 1920’s and was utilized by the group and their friends on a social basis.
The Child’s family were noted vigerons and the land on which the golf course was located had previously been successfully developed as a vineyard from which quality wines and champagnes had been produced and distributed. In fact, the product was entered in overseas Franco/British exhibitions, and at Earls Court, winning four gold medals.

In 1921 nine courageous men who made up the Foundation Committee of Sandgate Golf had a dream. Their dream was to convert 57 acres which was largely salt water and mangrove swamp into a golf course. To fulfil their dream, they had to challenge the might of the high tides and this challenge has been accepted by every committee ever since. By the efforts of those few Foundation Members, the higher portion of the land which was not so subject to tidal influence was soon cleared and 6 holes were made available for play.

In 1934, when the M.R. Hornibrook Company was building the Hornibrook Highway (now the Houghton Highway), the Directors of that Company thought that establishing a golf course at the northern end of the bridge, could be a feasible proposition. Accordingly they purchased 166 acres of what was mostly farming land.
In the early 1930’s Clontarf, with access only from Anzac Avenue, was the most remote area on the Redcliffe Peninsula. When the highway across Hayes Inlet was completed it brought about a remarkable change to Clontarf, which now became the front door to the Peninsula, and a great area for a golf course.
