A quality mattress is an excellent investment in your sleep. If you take proper care of it, it should last for years and provide good support. You can prevent your mattresses from becoming dirty or damaged with some steps. But, if prevention fails, there are remedies. I’ve got some cheap tips for mattress cleaning. And I also have a few maintenance tasks you can do to help prolong the life of your mattress.
Cheap mattress cleaning tips
Invest in a good quality cover
To protect your new purchase from damage and everyday wear and tear, you should invest in a good quality cover. The one thing that mattresses hate is moisture, whether it is food or drink spillage, condensation or body sweat – I know it’s not a pleasant subject, but we each lose about half a pint of sweat every night, and the only place it can be absorbed is our bedding or our bed.
The covers act as a barrier between you and your new mattress and will catch any moisture before it reaches the mattress; it will also help reduce the amount of wear. Covers are relatively cheap and can be replaced much easier than the mattress itself.

Protection against any Liquids
If moisture does get through, it is essential that you soak up any excess liquid before you start to attempt cleaning. After mopping up any extra fluids, you can use a good quality fabric cleaner to scrub the stained area. You must make sure it is 100% dry before you sleep on it again – use a fan or, better still, allow as much fresh air as possible to circulate around the mattress.
Do whatever it takes to get your mattress dry because if you don’t, it can become mouldy, and rot can start to set in – Whatever method you choose, please do not underestimate the importance of this drying stage!
Once it is thoroughly dry, sprinkle on baking soda and leave it for 24 hours before you vacuum it off. The baking soda will help eliminate any odours that have developed due to the spillage.
Prevent Wear and Tear
Mattresses take a lot of abuse, and we need to be vigilant to ensure they don’t wear too much in limited areas. The best way to prevent any wearing in one place is to rotate and flip it on a regular basis – try numbering the corners with a marker pen; this will help you remember which way you need to flip or rotate next time.

Guidelines to follow while cleaning
Cleaning should be done every six months. Regular vacuuming is advised. A washable cover aids in reducing allergies, dust mites and frequent vacuuming. A shampoo may be used to clean soil and dirt. Also, water may be added to a mild detergent until suds form. The suds are applied to the area using a sponge. Wipe with warm water and allow to dry thoroughly.
These cheap mattress cleaning tips, along with the occasional vacuuming, should mean you get years of peaceful sleeping from your new bed.
